2026 Spanish Grand Prix Race Report: Antonelli Takes Victory in Madrid
Kimi Antonelli claimed victory in the inaugural Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s new Madring circuit, strengthening his position at the top of the 2026 Drivers’ Championship.
The Mercedes driver crossed the line ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris after a race in which strategy and track position proved crucial.
Norris had looked well placed to convert his pole position into victory, but the timing of a Virtual Safety Car and his subsequent pit stop changed the complexion of the race. Antonelli capitalised and ultimately secured his eighth Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season.
It was another major result for the young Italian and Mercedes as Formula 1 completed its first Grand Prix weekend around the new Madrid circuit.
Norris Leads From Pole in Madrid
Lando Norris started the Spanish Grand Prix from pole position after beating Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds in Saturday’s qualifying session.
The McLaren driver made the most of his starting position and controlled the early stages, while Antonelli, Verstappen and the other leading contenders remained in contention behind him.
As the race developed, however, it became clear that overtaking around Madring was going to be difficult. That placed even greater importance on pit-stop timing and maintaining track position.
Norris appeared to have the pace required to fight for victory, but the intervention of the Virtual Safety Car ultimately worked against him.
Virtual Safety Car Changes the Race
The decisive moment came when the Virtual Safety Car created an opportunity for several drivers to minimise the time lost during their pit stops.
McLaren brought Norris in just as the VSC period was ending, meaning the World Champion did not receive the same strategic advantage as some of his rivals.
The unfortunate timing cost Norris track position and left him behind both Antonelli and Verstappen.
With passing opportunities limited, Norris was unable to recover the places despite having strong pace during the closing stages.
Antonelli took full advantage at the front and put himself in position to secure another important victory.
Antonelli Wins the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix
Kimi Antonelli kept his composure through the closing stages to take the chequered flag and become the first Formula 1 winner at the new Madring circuit.
Max Verstappen delivered a strong performance for Red Bull to finish second.
Norris closed on Verstappen but could not find a way past the four-time World Champion and had to settle for third after starting the afternoon from pole.
Charles Leclerc brought his Ferrari home in fourth position, while George Russell completed the top five for Mercedes.
The result means Antonelli leaves Madrid with an even stronger advantage in the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.

Strong Result for Verstappen and Red Bull
Second place represented an excellent result for Max Verstappen, particularly as Norris appeared to have greater pace during parts of the race.
Track position proved enormously valuable around Madring, and Verstappen successfully kept Norris behind during the closing stages to secure second place.
Liam Lawson also delivered useful points for Red Bull with sixth position, giving the team two cars inside the top six.
Difficult Day for Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton’s Spanish Grand Prix weekend ended in disappointment after the Ferrari driver retired early in the race.
Hamilton had qualified fourth and therefore started with a realistic opportunity of scoring a strong result. However, his race came to an early end following problems with his Ferrari.
It completed a frustrating weekend for Hamilton, who had also crashed during Saturday’s final practice session.
Ferrari nevertheless collected valuable points through Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth.
McLaren Leave Madrid Wondering What Might Have Been
For McLaren, third place for Norris and eighth for Oscar Piastri represented a respectable points haul, but there will undoubtedly be frustration after Norris started from pole.
Norris had demonstrated excellent pace throughout the weekend and looked capable of becoming the first winner at Madring.
Instead, the Virtual Safety Car and subsequent pit-stop sequence changed the order at the front.
The narrow nature of parts of the Madrid circuit then made recovering the lost positions extremely difficult.
Antonelli Strengthens His Championship Lead
Victory in Madrid further strengthens Antonelli’s position at the top of the 2026 Drivers’ Championship.
The Mercedes youngster leaves Spain with 292 points, ahead of team-mate George Russell on 211 points.
Lewis Hamilton remains third with 191 points, with Lando Norris on 186 and Charles Leclerc on 167.
With Antonelli continuing to accumulate victories and podium finishes, his rivals now face an increasingly difficult task if they are to prevent him from becoming Formula 1 World Champion.
