George Russell leads Max Verstappen at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku

Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2026 Race Report: Russell Holds Off Verstappen in Baku Thriller

George Russell claimed a dramatic victory at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off a charging Max Verstappen in a tense finish on the streets of Baku.

The Mercedes driver converted pole position into victory after 51 action-packed laps around the Baku City Circuit, but what initially looked like a comfortable afternoon became anything but straightforward.

A late charge from Verstappen brought the Red Bull to within touching distance of the Mercedes, and the pair crossed the line separated by just 0.1 seconds.

Behind them, Isack Hadjar completed an impressive return to Formula 1 competition by taking third for Red Bull, keeping Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari behind him during the closing stages.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli produced one of the recovery drives of the afternoon. Starting 16th following his qualifying crash, the Mercedes driver fought his way back to fifth.

For McLaren, however, Baku proved to be a race to forget.

Lando Norris was eliminated following a chaotic Turn 1 incident, while Oscar Piastri saw a potential podium disappear after locking up and running deep at the first corner late in the race.

It was another unpredictable afternoon in Azerbaijan – exactly the kind of race Baku has become famous for.

Russell Makes the Perfect Start from Pole

Russell had dominated qualifying, setting a 1:42.526 to beat Leclerc to pole by more than eight tenths of a second.

He carried that advantage into the race.

When the lights went out, Russell made a clean getaway and retained the lead into Turn 1.

Behind him, Piastri made an excellent start from third and immediately attacked Leclerc.

The McLaren driver successfully moved ahead of the Ferrari at the opening corner to take second place and initially looked like the driver most likely to challenge Russell.

But Russell wasn’t interested in waiting around.

Within the opening 10 laps, the Mercedes driver had established a gap of approximately five seconds over Piastri.

After dominating much of the practice running and qualifying, Russell appeared to have complete control of the Grand Prix.

Further back, Verstappen was beginning his charge.

Verstappen Charges Through the Field

Starting eighth wasn’t where Verstappen would have wanted to begin an Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

But the Red Bull quickly demonstrated impressive race pace.

Verstappen worked his way through the cars ahead and was soon challenging the leading group.

Piastri remained second, while Verstappen found himself trying to close in on the McLaren.

The Dutchman initially struggled to find a way past despite repeatedly getting close enough to threaten an attack.

There was another Red Bull directly behind him too.

Hadjar, returning after missing three races with a wrist injury, was producing an excellent performance and showed that he wasn’t simply prepared to follow his teammate.

By the middle stages of the Grand Prix, the two Red Bulls were running close together.

Hadjar was eventually given permission to race Verstappen provided the pair kept things clean, adding another intriguing element to the battle behind Russell.

Antonelli Begins His Recovery from 16th

One of the biggest stories heading into the race surrounded championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

The Mercedes driver had crashed at Turn 1 during Q1 on Friday, leaving him starting down in 16th position.

His recovery didn’t begin particularly well.

Antonelli made a sluggish start and actually lost another position on the opening lap.

With Russell disappearing into the distance at the front, it looked as though the championship leader could be facing a damaging afternoon.

Gradually, however, Antonelli began making progress.

By Lap 17 he had worked his way into the points.

His task was helped when Norris suffered a major lock-up, allowing Antonelli to move further forward.

The Mercedes driver eventually climbed to eighth before the race was transformed by the first major late-race incident.

Albon Crash Brings Out the Safety Car

On Lap 31, Alex Albon crashed into the barriers at Turn 5.

The accident brought out the Safety Car and immediately changed the complexion of the race.

The leading drivers headed into the pits.

Russell switched onto soft tyres, with Verstappen also choosing the softer compound. Several of the drivers around them opted for mediums.

Russell’s comfortable advantage had disappeared.

After spending much of the race managing his lead, the Mercedes driver suddenly had Verstappen much closer behind him.

And there was still plenty of racing to come.

Chaos at the Restart

Baku has built its Formula 1 reputation around unpredictable Safety Cars, restarts and late drama.

The 2026 race provided another example.

At the restart, Franco Colapinto attempted an ambitious move into Turn 1 but locked his tyres.

The resulting incident involved his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

All three were caught up in the accident, with Norris’ race coming to an abrupt end.

Thankfully, the drivers escaped unharmed, but another Safety Car was required.

The race would need to be restarted again.

Russell’s route to victory was becoming considerably more complicated.

Piastri’s Podium Hopes Disappear

When racing resumed, Piastri was still in the fight for a podium position.

Hadjar was putting the McLaren under pressure, but Piastri initially managed to defend third place.

Then came a costly mistake.

On Lap 40, Piastri locked up heavily approaching Turn 1.

The McLaren ran deep and dropped down the order, falling from the podium positions to outside the points.

It completed a disastrous sequence for McLaren.

Norris was already out of the race and now Piastri’s hopes of a strong result had effectively disappeared as well.

For Hadjar, the mistake opened the door to a podium.

But Leclerc was still chasing.

Hadjar Delivers an Impressive Red Bull Podium

Hadjar had already impressed throughout the race, particularly considering this was his first Grand Prix back after a three-race absence.

Once Piastri dropped out of contention, Hadjar found himself in third position.

Leclerc was immediately behind.

The Ferrari driver applied pressure, but Hadjar kept his composure and defended the final podium place.

When the chequered flag fell, the Red Bull driver crossed the line third.

It also gave Red Bull a double podium, with Verstappen second.

For Hadjar, it was an excellent return and one of the standout performances of the weekend.

Antonelli Fights Back to Fifth

Antonelli’s recovery continued during the closing stages.

The championship leader eventually found himself behind Lewis Hamilton and launched an attack on the Ferrari.

On Lap 43, Antonelli made his move along Baku’s enormous main straight and swept past Hamilton to claim fifth.

Leclerc was now only a few seconds ahead.

Antonelli reported floor damage as he attempted to close the gap to the Ferrari, preventing him from mounting a serious late challenge for fourth.

Nevertheless, fifth place represented an impressive recovery after starting 16th.

It also limited the damage caused by Russell’s victory.

Russell had taken maximum advantage of his teammate’s qualifying problems, but Antonelli had ensured his championship lead remained substantial.

Verstappen Hunts Down Russell

At the front, the race was becoming increasingly tense.

Russell had led throughout, but Verstappen was now within striking distance.

With around 10 laps remaining, the Red Bull was inside a second of the Mercedes.

The gap fell to approximately six tenths as the race entered its final stages.

Verstappen remained close enough to benefit from Baku’s long straight but couldn’t quite get himself into position to make the decisive move.

Russell absorbed the pressure.

Lap after lap, he kept the Mercedes ahead.

Then came one final twist.

Russell Wins by Just 0.1 Seconds

On the final lap, Valtteri Bottas hit the wall at Turn 15.

Double yellow flags were shown.

Russell reported losing boost as he passed through the affected section, giving Verstappen one final opportunity to close.

The Red Bull rapidly reduced the gap.

After controlling much of the race, Russell suddenly found himself racing Verstappen all the way to the chequered flag.

But the Mercedes driver had done enough.

Russell crossed the line to win the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Verstappen only 0.1 seconds behind.

It was Russell’s third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season and completed an outstanding weekend in Baku after his dominant pole position on Friday.

Hadjar took third ahead of Leclerc, while Antonelli’s recovery brought him home fifth.

A Difficult Day for McLaren

McLaren arrived in Baku with opportunities to score significant points but left with very little to celebrate.

Piastri initially looked strong.

His move on Leclerc at the start immediately put him into second position, and for the opening stages he appeared capable of challenging for a podium.

But his Turn 1 lock-up on Lap 40 effectively destroyed his race.

Norris suffered an even worse afternoon after becoming involved in the restart incident triggered by Colapinto.

It was a dramatic reversal after both McLarens had started inside the top five.

Russell Cuts Antonelli’s Championship Advantage

Russell’s victory also has implications for the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.

Antonelli arrived in Azerbaijan with a commanding lead after winning eight of the opening 14 races of the season.

His qualifying crash provided Russell with a rare opportunity to take a significant number of points out of his teammate.

Russell delivered exactly what was required.

Victory moved him to 236 points, while Antonelli’s recovery to fifth leaves the championship leader on 302 points.

That means Antonelli still holds a 66-point advantage over Russell.

Lewis Hamilton remains third in the standings on 199 points, followed by Lando Norris on 186 and Charles Leclerc on 179.

There is still a significant gap at the top, but Russell has at least reduced it after an almost faultless weekend in Azerbaijan.

Another Classic Afternoon on the Streets of Baku

Before the race, we looked back at 10 years of Formula 1 racing in Baku and the extraordinary moments that have helped establish the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as one of the calendar’s most unpredictable events.

The 2026 race has now added another chapter.

There were crashes, Safety Cars, a chaotic restart, McLaren heartbreak, an outstanding recovery from the championship leader and a battle for victory that went all the way to the line.

Russell may have started from pole and led throughout, but his victory was anything but guaranteed.

Verstappen pushed him until the final metres.

Hadjar produced an impressive comeback performance to reach the podium.

Antonelli recovered from 16th to fifth.

And once again, Baku proved that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is rarely over until the chequered flag falls.

For Formula 1 fans considering experiencing the race in person, the combination of dramatic street racing, the historic Old City and Baku’s Caspian Sea setting continues to make the Azerbaijan Grand Prix one of the most distinctive destinations on the F1 calendar.

After another dramatic race in 2026, attention will eventually turn towards the next visit to Baku – and what surprises the city’s streets might deliver next.
