2026 Italian Grand Prix Race Report: Antonelli Claims Historic Home Victory at Monza

The 2026 Italian Grand Prix delivered an extraordinary afternoon at Monza as Kimi Antonelli produced a remarkable drive through the field to win his home Grand Prix for Mercedes.

Starting from 19th on the grid following a power unit penalty, Antonelli faced what appeared to be an extremely difficult task at the Temple of Speed. Starting 19th at Monza would normally make victory extremely unlikely.

Antonelli, however, combined impressive overtaking with strong race pace and an effective Mercedes strategy.

As the race developed, he continued climbing through the order.

A Virtual Safety Car provided an important strategic opportunity, allowing Mercedes to put Antonelli onto fresher tyres and give him the performance required to attack during the final part of the Grand Prix.

What had initially looked like a recovery drive for points was rapidly becoming a fight for the podium – and then a fight for victory.

Russell remained in control at the front, but Antonelli was closing.

Antonelli Versus Russell for Victory

The Italian Grand Prix ultimately developed into a battle between the two Mercedes drivers.

Russell had led for much of the race following the early interruption, but tyre degradation began to make his position increasingly vulnerable.

Antonelli, equipped with fresher tyres, continued reducing the gap.

With only three laps remaining, the Italian finally made his move.

Antonelli passed his Mercedes team-mate to take the lead of his home Grand Prix, sending the Monza crowd into celebration.

There was still time for one final scare when Antonelli briefly ran through the gravel, but he recovered and maintained his advantage.

After starting 19th, Antonelli crossed the finish line first to complete an exceptional comeback victory.

Mercedes Celebrate a Monza One-Two

Mercedes could hardly have asked for a better result.

Russell looked capable of taking victory for much of the afternoon, but Antonelli’s recovery from the back of the grid ultimately proved unstoppable.

A Mercedes one-two at Monza would have been an excellent result under any circumstances. Having an Italian driver standing on the top step of the podium made the occasion even more memorable.

For Russell, second place still represented another strong result, although Antonelli’s victory means the Italian has strengthened his advantage over his team-mate in the Drivers’ Championship.

After 13 rounds, Antonelli leads Russell by 66 points.

Verstappen Completes the Podium

Max Verstappen took third place for Red Bull.

The Dutchman had started fifth and remained in contention for a podium throughout the race, eventually taking valuable championship points despite not having the pace to challenge the Mercedes pair for victory.

Behind Verstappen, McLaren secured a strong double points finish.

Lando Norris finished fourth, with Oscar Piastri following in fifth.

Piastri had qualified third but was demoted on the starting grid following a penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying.

Mixed Emotions for Ferrari at Monza

The Italian Grand Prix is always one of the most important weekends of the season for Ferrari, but the Scuderia endured a difficult home race.

Leclerc’s early accident removed one Ferrari from contention, leaving Hamilton to carry the team’s hopes.

Hamilton eventually finished sixth.

It was a respectable points finish, but far from the home victory the Tifosi had hoped to celebrate.

Disappointment for Pole-Sitter Gasly

Pierre Gasly had been one of the stories of the weekend after producing a sensational qualifying performance to put Alpine on pole.

Gasly was unable to convert that starting position into a podium, eventually finishing seventh.

Nevertheless, the weekend demonstrated significant pace from Alpine, with Franco Colapinto also scoring points in ninth.

Arvid Lindblad produced another impressive performance for Racing Bulls to finish eighth, while team-mate Yuki Tsunoda completed the top ten.
