2026 Belgian Grand Prix Race Report: Antonelli Claims Dramatic Spa Victory

Kimi Antonelli strengthened his Formula 1 World Championship challenge with an impressive victory in the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Mercedes driver started from pole position and survived an eventful 44-lap race featuring an opening-lap collision, Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car periods, changing strategies and a determined late challenge from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Antonelli crossed the finishing line ahead of Leclerc, with Max Verstappen completing the podium for Red Bull. It was Antonelli’s sixth victory from the opening ten rounds of the 2026 season and extended his advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.

Opening-Lap Drama at Spa

Antonelli made a strong start from pole, although Verstappen briefly challenged for the lead on the run through Eau Rouge and along the Kemmel Straight.

The Mercedes driver quickly responded and regained first place, while Leclerc also passed Verstappen to move into second.

Behind the leaders, George Russell’s race ended almost immediately following contact with Lewis Hamilton. Russell, who had started third, lost ground after reporting a power and battery problem before attempting to recover his position alongside the Ferrari.

The two cars made contact, sending Russell into the gravel and bringing out the Safety Car. Hamilton was able to continue but received a five-second penalty for causing the collision.

The retirement was a major blow to Russell’s championship hopes, particularly with teammate Antonelli going on to claim maximum points.

Leclerc Takes Advantage of the Virtual Safety Car

Antonelli controlled the restart and gradually established a small lead over Verstappen and Leclerc.

The strategic complexion of the race changed when a Virtual Safety Car period allowed Leclerc to make a less costly pit stop. Ferrari took advantage of the opportunity, enabling Leclerc to emerge ahead of Antonelli in the effective race lead.

However, Antonelli remained composed and began closing the gap once the race returned to full speed.

With 11 laps remaining, the Mercedes driver moved within striking distance of the Ferrari. Antonelli completed the decisive pass at the end of the Kemmel Straight on lap 33, reclaiming first position from Leclerc.

Leclerc stayed close during the closing stages, but Antonelli managed the pressure and his tyres well enough to secure the victory.

Verstappen Completes the Podium

Verstappen finished third after showing competitive pace during the opening phase of the race.

The Red Bull driver challenged Antonelli early on and briefly moved into the lead, but the timing of the Virtual Safety Car worked against his strategy. He was unable to match the leading Mercedes and Ferrari during the final stint but still collected an important podium finish.

Hamilton recovered from his opening-lap penalty to finish fourth. He passed Oscar Piastri during the closing laps, although his race also included an investigation relating to an unsafe release during his pit stop.

Piastri brought his McLaren home in fifth despite reporting floor damage following earlier contact with Leclerc.

Norris Recovers from 13th on the Grid

Lando Norris produced one of the strongest recovery drives of the afternoon.

The McLaren driver had qualified near the front but started 13th after receiving a ten-place grid penalty for exceeding his permitted allocation of power unit components.

Norris progressed steadily through the field and eventually finished seventh, immediately behind Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar. His result could have been even stronger had he not suffered a slow pit stop caused by a problem with the left-rear wheel.

Gabriel Bortoleto finished eighth for Audi, while Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto completed the points-paying positions.

Antonelli Extends His Championship Lead

Victory at Spa marked an important response from Antonelli following several challenging races.

The Italian showed impressive composure after losing the effective lead during the pit-stop phase. Rather than attempting a rushed move, he managed his tyres, gradually reduced Leclerc’s advantage and completed a controlled overtake when the opportunity arrived.

With Russell failing to finish, Antonelli leaves Belgium with a significantly stronger position in the Drivers’ Championship. Hamilton moved into second place in the standings, with Russell dropping to third following his retirement.

The 2026 Belgian Grand Prix once again demonstrated why Spa-Francorchamps remains one of Formula 1’s most demanding and unpredictable circuits. High-speed racing, strategic uncertainty and dramatic incidents combined to produce another memorable Belgian Grand Prix.
