Spectacular Formula 1 weekend in Florida

Written by Fergus Wilkie

The 2026 Miami Grand Prix delivered another spectacular Formula 1 weekend in Florida as Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured a stunning victory around the Miami International Autodrome. In front of packed grandstands, celebrity-filled hospitality areas and huge global television audiences, the young Italian produced a composed and mature drive to take one of the biggest wins of his Formula 1 career so far.

The Miami Grand Prix has quickly become one of the most high-profile races on the Formula 1 calendar, blending motorsport with entertainment, luxury hospitality and the vibrant atmosphere that surrounds the city itself. The 2026 edition once again attracted massive crowds throughout the weekend, with fans travelling from around the world to experience Formula 1 in one of the sport’s fastest-growing destinations.

Practice sessions throughout the weekend suggested that the competitive order would be extremely close heading into qualifying. Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull all showed strong pace at different stages, while changing track conditions and high temperatures made setup decisions particularly difficult for the teams.

Qualifying proved incredibly competitive, with only fractions of a second separating the leading drivers. Antonelli impressed throughout the session with confident performances in every qualifying segment, continuing the remarkable form that has rapidly established him as one of the stars of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The Miami International Autodrome once again presented drivers with a difficult combination of long straights, technical corners and heavy braking zones. Overtaking opportunities existed into several corners, but drivers still needed confidence and precision to complete moves successfully. Tyre management also became increasingly important throughout the weekend due to the hot Florida conditions and abrasive track surface.

At the start of the race, Antonelli made an excellent launch and immediately settled into a strong rhythm at the front of the field. Behind him, several drivers battled aggressively through the opening laps as teams looked to gain early track position before tyre degradation became a major factor later in the race.

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remained close throughout the opening stages, keeping pressure on the Mercedes driver while also managing their tyres carefully. Ferrari and Red Bull also remained within striking distance during the first half of the race, creating a tense strategic battle among the leading teams.

Pit stop strategy became one of the key talking points of the afternoon. Some teams attempted early undercuts to gain position, while others extended their opening stint hoping for a late safety car or better tyre performance in the closing laps. The varying strategies created several exciting midfield battles and kept the final outcome uncertain for much of the race.

Antonelli handled the pressure superbly throughout the event, demonstrating maturity beyond his years as he managed tyre wear, traffic and repeated attacks from behind. His pace remained consistently strong throughout each stint, particularly during the crucial middle phase of the race when several rivals struggled with overheating tyres.

The Miami Grand Prix circuit is well known for producing incidents and safety car periods, and the 2026 race included several tense moments throughout the field. Minor collisions and lock-ups placed additional pressure on drivers already struggling with tyre degradation and track temperatures.

One of the defining moments of the race came during the latter stages when Norris began closing the gap to Antonelli following the final round of pit stops. The McLaren driver pushed hard during the closing laps, but Antonelli responded calmly and maintained enough pace to protect his lead under enormous pressure.

Oscar Piastri also delivered another strong performance for McLaren, securing a podium finish and continuing his impressive consistency throughout the season. The McLaren team once again demonstrated excellent overall pace and tyre management, strengthening their position in the Constructors’ Championship battle.

Behind the leading trio, several midfield teams produced competitive performances. Ferrari showed strong pace at certain stages but ultimately lacked the consistency needed to challenge for victory. Red Bull endured a more difficult weekend than expected, struggling at times with balance and tyre performance around the demanding Miami circuit.

Mercedes’ victory represented another major milestone in Antonelli’s rapidly developing Formula 1 career. The Italian driver has adapted remarkably quickly to the pressures of Formula 1 and continues to impress both fans and paddock insiders with his speed, confidence and race management abilities.

The atmosphere throughout the Miami weekend remained one of the biggest talking points away from the circuit. Celebrity appearances, concerts, luxury hospitality events and packed fan zones created a festival-style environment that has become closely associated with the Miami Grand Prix since its arrival on the Formula 1 calendar.

The event also highlighted Formula 1’s continued growth within the United States. Massive media attention, sponsorship activity and fan engagement once again demonstrated how important the American market has become for the sport’s global expansion strategy.

Weather conditions remained stable throughout race day despite concerns earlier in the weekend regarding possible rain showers. The warm temperatures placed significant stress on tyres and cooling systems, adding another layer of complexity for teams managing race strategy and car performance.

For Antonelli, the Miami victory further strengthened his position in the Drivers’ Championship standings and confirmed his growing status as a genuine title contender. His calm and controlled performance under pressure drew praise throughout the paddock and further increased excitement surrounding the future of Formula 1’s newest generation of drivers.

The 2026 Miami Grand Prix ultimately delivered everything fans have come to expect from Formula 1 in Florida: close racing, strategic uncertainty, overtaking battles, celebrity glamour and a dramatic finish under the Miami sunshine.
