Antonelli Takes Stunning Silverstone Pole Ahead of Ferrari Duo

Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable rise by securing pole position for the British Grand Prix after another outstanding performance at Silverstone. The 19-year-old Italian, who had already claimed victory in Saturday’s sprint race, delivered a superb final qualifying lap to comfortably outpace the Ferraris and his Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

Antonelli finished 0.175 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton put his Ferrari third on the grid. Russell was forced to settle for fourth after finishing 0.370 seconds behind his young team-mate.

Further down the order, Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar impressed with fifth place, finishing ahead of reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, who was separated from the French driver by McLaren’s Lando Norris. Championship leader Oscar Piastri secured seventh, with Racing Bulls duo Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson completing a competitive top ten.

Antonelli Delivers Under Pressure

Antonelli’s confidence around the fast and flowing Silverstone circuit was evident throughout qualifying. Despite expressing concern over being the first driver to begin the final qualifying runs, he produced a near-perfect lap when it mattered most.

Improving his previous effort by almost three tenths of a second, the Mercedes driver left his rivals with no opportunity to challenge his benchmark.

Speaking after qualifying, Antonelli said:

“I was a bit stressed because I never really like going first for the last run, but the final lap came together really well. The wind made conditions difficult and unpredictable, so putting everything together for pole was incredibly satisfying.”

Ferrari Showing Encouraging Progress

Charles Leclerc’s second-place finish marked an encouraging turnaround after several challenging race weekends. It was the first time since the Miami Grand Prix that the Monegasque driver had out-qualified Lewis Hamilton, suggesting Ferrari’s recent developments are beginning to pay off.

Leclerc commented:

“It’s been a difficult few races, but we’ve worked hard behind the scenes to get the feeling back in the car. This weekend was the first time everything really came together again.”

Hamilton admitted he was disappointed not to be higher on the grid but remained positive about Ferrari’s improving form.

“I’m never satisfied with third, but both Kimi and Charles did a great job. We’re gradually closing the gap to Mercedes, and having both Ferraris near the front is encouraging.”

Russell Faces a Tough Challenge

George Russell’s qualifying session got off to a difficult start after locking up at Luffield on his opening flying lap, damaging his front wing. Although Mercedes repaired the car in time for him to continue, the incident disrupted his rhythm.

Russell remained close to Antonelli after the opening runs, but while the Italian found almost three tenths on his final attempt, Russell was unable to improve and ultimately qualified fourth.

With Antonelli already taking maximum points in the sprint race, his pole position gives him another significant boost heading into Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

An Exciting British Grand Prix Ahead

Mercedes head into race day with renewed confidence following Antonelli’s impressive pace throughout the weekend. Ferrari also appear to have closed the performance gap, while McLaren and Red Bull remain firmly in contention, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Fans can expect an exciting battle into the opening corners as Antonelli looks to convert pole position into another memorable victory, while Leclerc, Hamilton and Russell will all be aiming to spoil Mercedes’ celebrations in front of a packed Silverstone crowd.
