Declared a National Monument in 1987, the hotel has grown from strength to strength. With its restoration and reopening in 1991, Raffles Hotel today stands as a jewel in the crown of Singapore's hospitality industry, renowned and loved for its inimitable style and unsurpassed excellence in service and facilities dating back to 1887, Raffles Hotel is one of the few remaining great nineteenth century hotels in the world.

Declared a National Monument by the Singapore Government in 1987, Raffles Hotel has, through the years, gained international recognition as a traveller's paradise with its unique blend of classical architecture and tropical garden setting.

In l989, Raffles Hotel closed for two and a half years for complete restoration. This careful and committed process was undertaken at a cost of S$160 million by Raffles Hotel (l886) Ltd. The benchmark year used for the restoration was 1915, the first heyday of the Hotel. Reopened on 16 September 1991, the restored Raffles Hotel features 103 suites, each with hardwood floors, fourteen foot ceilings, overhead fans, central air conditioning and all the other amenities expected of a Grand Hotel. The furnishings throughout reflect the style and ambience of the Hotel's early heyday.

Over four hundred pieces of existing furniture were restored and re used in Raffles. These items bear identifying brass crests signifying that they are a part of Raffles Hotel's past and are displayed throughout the Hotel. In addition, more than 8,000 pieces of silver and historical china, some dating back to the era of the Hotel's founders, Sarkies brothers, have been inventoried and dated as to the period of use. The historical pieces are used where appropriate and form the basis of historical displays throughout the Hotel and the adjoining facilities. The distinctive restaurants and bars within Raffles Hotel recall the atmosphere of a bygone era. Tiffin Room, adjacent to the lobby, continues as the traditional main dining area. Raffles Grill, the elegant fine dining room, provides a clear view through to the Palm Court while Writers Bar continues to pay tribute to the novelists and travel writers who have become part of the Raffles Hotel legend.

The Bar & Billiard Room is decidedly masculine, as it was in the early 1900s, with tile and hardwood floors and period furnishings. Two antique billiard tables, one of them a Raffles Hotel original, the other from Government House, take pride of place.

The adjoining land parcel, built in architectural harmony with the Hotel, is known as "Raffles Hotel Arcade". Raffles Hotel Arcade is an integral part of Raffles Hotel, offering a broad range of facilities for visitors to enjoy. It houses 40 regional and specialty shops, indoor and outdoor function areas including The Ballroom and The Lawn and a variety of restaurants and bars including Long Bar where the famous Singapore Sling was created, Empire Cafe, a bustling between the wars coffeehouse, Seah Street Deli, a typical casual New York delicatessen and a trendy yet traditional restaurant, Doc Cheng's, featuring unique `Trans-Ethnic' restorative foods.

Also at Raffles Hotel Arcade is the Jubilee Hall, a recreation of a nineteenth century playhouse which features audio visual presentations, plays, recitals and cultural events. And the Raffles Hotel Museumshowcases memorabilia, period photographs and other mementos, providing a fascinating historical glimpse of the Hotel, colonial Singapore and travel in the East. Adding to the myriad of facilities to enjoy at the Arcade is the region's premier school of gastronomy, the Raffles Culinary Academy, offering a variety of cooking courses on Singapore's rich and diverse culinary heritage and Raffles signature dishes.

Tropical gardens have always been synonymous with Raffles Hotel. These occupy more than a quarter of the entire estate, providing a tranquil contrast to the bustling city beyond. The delightful sound of singing birds beyond the verandas and the rustle of palm branches in the breeze recalls the atmosphere of a bygone era and enhances the simpler pleasures of nature usually denied the modern traveller.

Tiffin Room

Tiffin, properly defined as a light mid-day meal, has long been a Raffles tradition. Although tiffin curry has been served here since 1899, the Hotel's main dining room has only officially been named the Tiffin Room since 1976. A restaurant run by the Sarkies from the 1890s at Raffles Place was known as the Raffles Tiffin Rooms. For most of this century a mild chicken curry was one of the few Asian mainstays on the hotel's daily menu as the partaking of Sunday tiffin curry was an essential aspect of colonial life. The Tiffin Room's décor and ambience reflects the Hotel's glory days from the turn of the century to the 1930s. The designs of the tables, chairs, and uniforms are all based on early photographs. Square teak tables - including many Raffles Hotel's originals - are combined with "palm back" bentwood chairs.

The brisk, white-jacketed waiters wear badges which replicate a prewar tukang badge, or "water carrier" badge, while the silver vase and salt and pepper shakers are replicate of decades-old silver plate pieces discovered in a storeroom during the restoration.

The Tiffin Curry Buffet, featuring traditional Indian and Asian specialities, is a hot favourite with tourists and Singapore residents alike. The Tiffin Room buffet is available for lunch and dinner.

The Tiffin Room also serves a international breakfast and a popular High Tea daily.

There is a small private dining room with a capacity of 8 seats at the south end. The private dining room is ideal for intimate dinner parties and for corporate entertaining, as the quiet charm of the restaurant is evident even at its busiest moments.

The Long Bar.

Home of the Singapore Sling, the earthy decor of this two-storey bar was inspired by the Malayan plantations of the 1920s. In addition to almost every alcoholic and non-alcoholic concoctions imaginable, the bar also serves traditional pub favourites that are available as a meal or snacks. In the evening, a band performs a selection of contemporary and popular hits. Exquisite Long Bar merchandise such as the famous Singapore Sling Glass and Sling Shaker are also available for purchase.
